“I remember you explaining why on the end of ISSN or ISBN codes the numbers ?can/must be substituted with X.” The last digit of these codes is calculated from the previous digits by an algorithm which may yield 10 as a result. In this case X (the Roman numeral for 10) is at the end of the number.

“what an offprint was” An offprint is a copy of a part of a book (a paper or a chapter) that can be distributed by its author. http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/offprint

(I’m sorry I did not notice these questions, there’s so little traffic here.)

Dear Professor Szigetvari,

I remember you explaining why on the end of ISSN or ISBN codes the numbers ?can/must be substituted with X. I didn't really understand why, and looking at the handout didn't help me. Could you explain?
Also, I again remember you talked about what an offprint was, but I didn't quite get it.

Thanks for helping,
Marta
