There was an "80's weekend" on MTV and this video came to my mind and had to find it right away :). You'll see why...

I know it's quite old, but the lyrics is still hilarious :))

Finally http://torokzene.lap.hu came to life! With lotsa Turkish music links to browse. have fun!

In the meantime Tarkan's English language album work came to the final steps and in october the masterpiece will be launched in the world music market. He sings a duet with Wyclef Jean (Fugees) and it is already available on the internet.... Rumours say Universal Germany loved the album so much that instead of publishing it only in Europe they will launch it all around the world! That tells us the album's gonna ROCK!

and well, as a teacher of English I must say Tarkan really has a good pronunciation considering how Turkish people usually speak English (Horrible.. ). Well, after all he lived in New York for a couple of years.

Hi everyone,

Since I simply love music, it would be very difficult - and long - to list them all, so I'll just name some of which comes to my mind at the moment :).
First of all I would like to mention one of my non-English all time favourites (to satisfy Teemeah's demans :), Gotan Project - check out the album 'La Revancha del Tango' on the site with sound on ;). They are an Argentinean band playing the most extraordinary trip-hop tango. I LOVE it. :)) Especially the accordion, fantastic. Of course I've got lots of favourites from all the different genres (rock, electronica, jazz, etc.), but mostly rock - Brit. & Am.n that is :). For example, a couple of great bands from Scotland called Franz Ferdinand ;) and Travis, or this "little" Irish band called U2 :D, or, last but not least, possibly the greatest rock band of the last couple of years: Coldplay.
Well, no time for more now, maybe next time... :)

Cheers,
Zo

ps. as an extra, and to compete with Teemeah's imagery :), here's one of my favourite jazz singers: Norah Jones

Image
...her voice is just as lovely :)

Right now I would mention Vitalic and Cursor Miner. Both kick a**!

SERTAB ERENER

Fantastic female singer with a voice so high and beuatiful she could sing operas. (Actually, she does). She won the Eurovision song contest in 2003.

http://www.sertab.com
Here you can hear her sing as soon ans the page downloads.

And an English article about her:

SEZEN AKSU

Probably Turkey's one and only real diva. She is loved, respected and admired throughout the whole country. There is not a single Turk who wouldn't be her fan. She is said to be the mother od Turkish popular music. Been in the business for some 30 years now. Exceptionally beautiful, characteristic voice and extreme musicality. She's written songs for a lot of Turkish singers, including Tarkan's Simarik and Sikidim world hits.

EMRE ALTUG

Emre is a young man who follows Tarkan's footsteps. He is sexy and charming and has a really good voice.

NAZAN ÖNCEL

Nazan is also a popualr singer in Turkey. She's kinda "freaky", folly, she's really a mystery. She started as an underground rock musician (yes not only as a singer but as a musician!) but then turned towards more popular music but kept her true originality and special approach towards music. She's good friends with Tarkan, wrote him a couple of hits like "Hüp" and ""Dudu". recently her latest album came out under Tarkan's own production company HITT Productions and she sings duets with Tarkan on the album Here's a video:

Image

CANDAN ERCTIN

Also a beautiful voiced singer.

http://www.candanercetin.mu/

MUSTAFA SANDAL

http://www.mustinet.net/

He's also quite popular, said to be Tarkan's greatest rival. Turkey is torn into two parts: "Tarkaners" and "Musti-fans". The fight is eternal and no peace can be made between the two. Mustafa lately broke into german music life with his song Isyankar that can also be heard at Juventus Radio (along with Tarkan's Dudu).

Everyone's favourites? 8) :?:

I don't really like music from the States and England, well, I listen to a few of them, I have a couple of favourite songs like Anastacia Sick and Tired or Bad by Michael Jackson but I've been getting tired of this continuous American carpet bombing of the music market, not allowing space for other quality music at all. I like listening to the music of other cultures, countries, in languages other than English. I'm a great admirer of Russian music, traditional and popular (NOT Tatu...). I love Aleksandr Malinin's voice. Beautiful, robust, with the necessary spice and romanticism.
http://www.malinin.ru for anyone who wants to check out what I'm talking about. He sings so-called "romansy" a special name for Russian romantic songs. But he also performs songs that have traditional Russian musical base, ballads and Russian poems (like those of Sergei Esenin's or Pushkin's)
Worth a try :)

Recently I've became addicted to Turkish music. Amazing, simply. They provide something totally different and new from European music (and yet so familar... uniting Europen musical traditions with Turkish/Arabic tunes). Turkish languages spices the songs even more. It becomes a magic unition, that makes you dance all night long or cry from joy. I've never heard so much power in any kind of music before.
And yes, this addiction started with Tarkan, and the Kissing Song (Originally "Simarik" /Spoilt/). Then I discovered that Tarkan has other songs as well, and has been in the market for 14 years now, strated his career as a 19 year old adolescent and immediately conquered the whole country. I discovered he really has a wonderful voice and a unique musicality, writing most of his songs. Then I started searching on the Internet, looking for Turkish music and I got to know other people who are just totally in love with Turkey and they sent me further songs. I discovered a lot of Turkish singers who have better voice than any of their American colleagues - and yet no one knows them outside of Turkey, unfortunaetly. The whole world thinks popular music can only come from America. Nonsense. Hereby I would like to present a short list of my favourite singers, illustrated with pictures andwebsites where you can actually listen to what I mean. :) Enjoy and discover this wonderful world of Turkish delight!
