Property and Freedom: May 2123, 2006

The Neuwaldegg Institute is proud to welcome Dr. Richard Pipes to Vienna from May 2123. Dr. Pipes, the Baird Professor of History, Emeritus at Harvard University, is considered one of the worlds leading authorities on Russian and Soviet history. The renowned historian will invite students to analyze the relationship between the right to own property and all other basic rights and freedoms as described in his book, Property and Freedom. In addition to his academic prominence, Dr. Pipes has extensive experience in government. Beginning 40 years ago as Chairman of the CIA's "Team B" to Review Strategic Intelligence Estimates, he later served as President Reagans National Security Council adviser on Soviet and East European affairs. In 1992 he was an expert witness in the Russian Constitutional Courts trial against the Communist Party after the fall of the Soviet Union. Please note that for this conference a background in history, economics or political science is required; completed applications must be received no later than March 31st .

Neuwaldegg Summer Seminar 2006: August 14-19, 2006

Let us also take this opportunity to remind you of our annual Neuwaldegg Summer Seminar, which will be held this year from August 14-19. A team of four professors with expertise in different aspects of philosophy present an array of issues to stimulate reflection on the constitutive elements of stable democracies and genuine freedom: fundamentals of philosophical reflection, comparative moral reasoning, issues in bioethics, and political philosophy. The wide range of academic disciplines and nationalities among the students ensures a fruitful discussion of how these principles should be applied in contemporary circumstances.

Again, thank you for recommending promising young people from Central and Eastern Europe, who are eager to learn about ideas capable of inspiring individuals and strengthening societies.
