The Pre-Raphaelites and Literature (A preraffaeliták és az irodalom) in spring 2004
Péteri Éva, Mon 15:30–17:00, ADS 234, host: DES (R338)
description & set texts
The Pre-Raphaelite painters' devotion to literature is well reflected in the great number of their works depicting literary themes. Some of these pictures are 'mere' illustrations while others can be seen as pictorial interpretations of the literary texts. The course proposes to study Malory's Morte d'Arthur, Dante's Vita Nuova, Shakespeare's Measure for Measure, and Hamlet, Keats' ``The Eve of Saint Agnes'', ``Isabella or The Pot of Basil'', ``La Belle Dame Sans Merci'', Tennyson's ``The Lady of Shalott'', ``Mariana'', ``The Palace of Art'', ``The Beggar Maid'' and Rossetti's ``The Blessed Damozel'', ``Ave'' and ``Mary Magdalene at the Door of Simon the Pharisee'' as they are treated in the paintings and drawings of J.E.Millais, W.H.Hunt, D.G.Rossetti, A.Hughes, E. Siddal, E.Burne-Jones, F.Sandys, J.M. Strudwick, W. Crane, F.C. Cowper, F. Dicksee, J.B.Shaw, S.Solomon and J.W.Waterhouse.
