description & set texts
This course has been designed for students who wish to gain an overview of the development of Australian literature in the 20th century. Paradoxically, the first reading on the course is dated 1893, but after reading 4-5 more recent versions of “The Drover's Wife”, students will understand why Henry Lawson was made to be our starting point. The Australian bush hero, the national type has been a point of reference for Australian authors ever since. A selection of Australian poetry and two plays will also be included in the course. The novel A Fringe of Leaves will provide students with an introduction to the works of Partrick White, Nobel Prize winner for literature. The course will offer a selection of contemporary writing as well (mainly in the form of short stories) dealing with the topics of national identity, multiculturalism, black and white relations and more.

Set texts include: Katharine Susannah Prichard Coonardoo, Patrick White: A Fringe of Leaves, Ray Lawler: The Summer of the Seventeenth Doll, Randolph Stow: To the Islands, etc.
