The primary aim of this practical course is to focus on the sound system of the English language and cover various aspects of pronunciation in communication at an advanced level. Through using multimedia materials, students will be provided with a wide range of pronunciation practice activities. Furthermore, emphasis will also be given to the teaching of pronunciation. Topics to be covered: phonemes, word stress, intonation and connected speech; silent letters, foreign words, problematic words as well as varieties and accents of English. Classes will include oral presentations and discussions of practical issues. Set texts: given units of English Pronunciation in Use – Advanced (Hewings, 2007), exercises from Test Your Pronunciation (Vaughan-Rees, 2002) and How to Teach Pronounciation (Kelly, 2000).
requirements & assessment
Requirements: regular attendance, active participation and preparation. Assessment will be based on three tests, short presentations and home assignments, participation and attendance.
