This course will be both theoretical and practical. On the theoretical side we will read chapters from Blevins' Evolutionary Phonology: The Emergence of Sound Patterns (2004). On the practical side, we will have problems collected from a number of languages. Questions such as patterns (natural and un-natural), rules, opacity, etc. will be addressed. Be prepared for data analysis and interpretation.
