This course will explore the vast and significant contribution that the Irish have made in informing and shaping the developement of the US and its culture. More specifically, we will focus on how the Irish presence made itself felt in cultural domains such as history, music, literature, film and politics,and how in general, the Irish became, despite the horrid indignities and formidable hardships they faced, one of the most successful ethnic groups in the U.S. Finally, we will examine the concept of Irishness- its implications, paradoxes and complexities within the framework of the American identity.
