Course description: The course aims to describe the theoretical background and practical implications of different aspects of culture, language and communication. It is hoped that the participants will complete the course with a heightened sense of cultural and intercultural awareness, as this disposition is crucial for every English language professional. Among others, the course discusses the following issues: Defining culture, Aspects and dimensions of culture, Understanding national cultures, Culture learning and acculturation, The role of culture in communication, Language and Culture, Intercultural communication, Discourse Analysis, Intercultural communicative competence, Research methods in cultural studies. The readings will serve as a basis for discussions and activities.

Form: Interactive lectures will cover the topics, and will be supplemented by support from the readings, practical activities and discussions. The participants will take an active involvement in the course.

Attendance: essential —Participants are asked to read the texts as scheduled.

Handouts are made available a few days before each lecture on the Course Materials page of the DELP website: http://delp.elte.hu/coursematerials.htm . Please bring the handouts along with you to the lectures either in printed or an electronic form.

requirements & assessment
Evaluation: There will be a written exam on the topics discussed and the theoretical issues in the readings. The exam will consist of multiple choice and gap fill items as well as open ended questions. Optional bonus task: By completing optional bonus tasks set in the second half of the term, extra points can be earned towards the exam results.
