We are going to discuss the following topics: 1 History of English in 90 minutes; 2 The Kirkdale Sundial and the Poor Whores' Petition; 3 Rats, bats and the standardisation of English; 4 English as a Lingua Franca; 5 English in the social media; 6 English in the age of Superdiversity; 7 Changing English and Corpus linguistics: models and typology; 8 Hipsterspotting – linguistic landscaping.
requirements & assessment
weekly assignments (incl. reading ca. 6 articles), small group project (online corpus, fieldwork photography) to be presented, group seminar paper on the project (ca 8 pages per group), classwork. Assessment is based on the arithmetic average of the above components.
