Aims: — a/ to classify, explain and illustrate the degrees of word stress; — b/ to present some of the stress rules of English, with unsolved problems or open questions; — c/ to examine tonic placement in compounds, sentences or phrases. Some exercises will be taken from A. Nádasdy's Practice Book in English Phonetics and Phonology (rev.ed. 2007) , which students will be required to possess; other exercises will be provided by the teacher. Students will have to read short passages from textbooks.
requirements & assessment
Written work: — a/ weekly homework, including transcription (Gimson/IPA/SSBE). — b/ 2 Classroom Tests (transcription + stress rules and problems). — c/ Home essay (cca 6 typed pages), on some problem of English word stress. Regular attendance (not more than 3 absences) and proper homework (all submitted, even if belatedly) is a pre-requisite for any mark. The endterm mark will be the mean of the two Classroom Tests and the Home Essay. Missed tests count as zero!
