Introduction to Linguistics (Bevezetés a nyelvtudományba) in autumn 2016
Marosán Lajos, Mon 11:30–13:00, R448, host: DELG (R301)
3-credit seminar, 30 h/term
description & set texts
This course provides a selection of the major topics of contemporary linguistic theory, with a focus on English linguistic problems. This seminar cannot give a general overview of linguistics (that purpose is meant to be fulfilled by the corresponding lecture series), but will choose various topics and issues that are usually part of a linguistic analysis. Fundamental theoretical aspects will be introduced and discussed in class through chapters taken from the coursebook (Laurie Bauer: The Linguistic Student's Handbook, available in electronic format on the SEAS homepage). A further objective is to familiarize students with English academic texts.
requirements & assessment
There will be 8 quizzes in class, purporting to check both the conceptual and linguistic understanding of the set text. The quizzes will be based on the texts and the home assignments. Six quizzes are obligatory. Students will be asked to hand in a home-essay at the end of the course, in which they will hopefully apply the skills they acquire in Academic Writing course. No more than three absences will be tolerated.
