(Haladó mondattan) in autumn 2017
, Mon 11:00–12:30
lecture, 30 h/term; weak prereq: BBN-ANG-251
description & set texts
In this course we will be returning to some of the areas introduced in the Syntax lecture, such as VP and clause structure, in order to investigate issues which were either glossed over or ignored completely. Thus a more fuller picture of English syntax will be given, including the distinction between phrasal and prepositional verbs, verbs with clausal complements and 'fronting' phenomena, such as topicalisation and focus and negative fronting. In order to paint this fuller picture, a number of theoretical devices will be introduced such as Case theory, trace theory and constraints on movement.
