3-credit seminar, 30 h/term; strong prereq: BBN-ANG-132
description & set texts
The course discusses selected parts of Newson, M. 2006, Basic English Grammar with Exercises (Chapter 1), Radford, A. 2009, An Introduction to English Sentence Structure (Chapter 1) and https://ocw.mit.edu/courses/linguistics-and-philosophy/24-900-introduction-to-linguistics-fall-2012/lecture-summaries/MIT24_900F12_Syntaxsummary.pdf, and helps promote students'understanding of current syntactic theory from a practical perspective. It runs parallel to the corresponding lecture but by no means does it strive to replace it, instead, although roughly the same topics are discussed (e.g. basic theoretical notions, word categories, X-bar theory,Theta Theory, the structure of thematic and functional projections), the seminars are intended to supplement and complement the lecture course.
