These seminars will concentrate on the common features and representation of syntactic structures (phrases and sentences). They will deal with word categories, structure, grammatical functions, X-bar theory, the theoretical aspects of movements, the Determiner Phrase, and some aspects of the Verb Phrase. The main activities will be: discussing and elaborating on various problems and subtopics, and doing a wide variety of exercises, including the drawing of tree-diagrams. There is a handout accompanying the seminar (see Coursematerials). Set text: Mark Newson et al.: Basic English Syntax with Exercises (Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetem 2006), chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Assessment based on weekly home assignments, and two in-class tests.
