Newson, Mark, Tue 10:00–10:45, Gólyavár B, host: DELG (R301)
2-credit lecture, 15 h/term; weak prereq: BBN-ANG-151
description & set texts
This lecture will be concerned with the actual analyses of English syntactic structures. To do this, more complex theoretical notions will need to be introduced, such as X-bar theory and the idea that sentences are to be analysed at a number of levels to be able to describe movement processes accurately. We will mainly be concentrating on two structures which will be developed simultaneously: the nominal phrase and the clause. Through a thorough investigation into the structure of these parts of the English language we will discover patterns that are prevalent in the language in many other structures and thus which can be considered to be part of the core description of the syntax of the language. The course text will be chapters from Basic English Syntax, though the lectures will follow their own course and not that of the book. There will be an end of term exam based on the lecture content and the material from the course text.
