The course explores some of the basic concepts of English phonology including (but not limited to) the classification of sounds (based on function and phonetic properties), allophonic rules in SSBE (L-darkening, aspiration, etc.), and letter to sound correspondences (graphic positions and vowel quality). There are no set texts. Course material is available electronically. At the completion of this course, students will: 1. have a basic understanding of the theoretical background of the study of speech sounds 2. be able to read and write phonological transcriptions 3. be able to make educated guesses about the pronunciation of English words based on their spelling 4. (possibly have improved their pronunciation of English) Syllabus:
requirements & assessment
Grading is based on the sum of the scores achieved on weekly assignments (50%) and the result of the 2 tests (midterm, end-term, 25% each).
