This course samples some of the finest works of English literature written between 1890 and 1960. While focussing on the literary texts, the course investigates various aspects of late-nineteenth and early-twentieth-century English society, including issues around gender, religion and social reform. Active participation is required during small-group seminar discussions and each student is to give a short presentation on a chosen topic as part of the course. Set texts: Henry James The Turn of the Screw, Selected Poems by Thomas Hardy, Selected Poems by W. B. Yeats, J. M. Synge The Playboy of the Western World, Selected Poems by Wilfred Owen, Virginia Woolf Mrs Dalloway, James Joyce 'Penelope' from Ulysses, Samuel Beckett Waiting for Godot, Selected Poems by Philip Larkin, Doris Lessing The Grass is Singing.
