The aim of this course is to introduce a variety of current, sometimes controversial topics connected to Australia with the view of using these to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
As the title says, the course will focus on Australia. I chose 12 topics which have often been the subject of media debates in the past few years in the national papers. I also selected some texts and/or videos for each topic. Everyone will be required to read the texts, view the videos (if applicable). However, each student will be assigned one topic, on which he/she is required to do more research than the others. This students then will introduce the background of the topic to the others and will lead a discussion. The discussion leader is also required to present new vocabulary to the others and create 1-2 exercises to practice new vocabulary/grammar (quiz, gap-fill, jumbled words, crossword etc). Must bring a handout for the whole class. Time frame for this: 15-20 minutes. At the end of the presentation some questions should be raised which can then be discussed/debated by all students.

As an additional task, you are required to write a one page response to each topic (summary of text, followed by own opinion or reaction to it) as well as to compile a list of about 20 new words/structures encountered in the text(s). Your presentation topic should be written up at greater length (1500words) and handed in any time in the course of the semester.

For the final assessment attendance, participation, presentation and all written tasks will be evaluated.
