Introduction to Linguistics (Bevezetés a nyelvtudományba) in autumn 2012
Lázár A. Péter, Thu 11:30–13:00, R327, host: DELG (R301)
2-credit seminar, 30 h/term
description & set texts
Complementing the Intro linguistics (Bevezetés a nyelvtudományba) lectures given in Hungarian

or the Intro linguistics lectures given in English,

these seminars give you a glimpse of the main concerns of linguistics and get you prepared to think & talk about these in English. The course looks at (i) sounds, (ii) words, (iii) phrases & sentences, and (iv) meaning. Hopefully, it also dispels some misconceptions about language and linguistics.

The reading for the seminar can be downloaded from http://seas3.elte.hu/coursematerial/LazarAPeter/index.html – go for “2012 IntroLingx” and download “No1”, which is László Varga Introduction to English Linguistics. A Companion to the Seminar (Revised and abridged), ELTE 2010. You should have this on you for each seminar. The file will be available from 1 August.

requirements & assessment
Assessment will be based on (i) spot check quizzes (ii) tests on the coursebook's topics. The tests will be announced in advance. You must have done the majority of both quizzes/tests for a valid grade. Details TBA. End-term grade: average of tests.
