3-credit seminar, 30 h/term
description & set texts
The course is designed to introduce students to the study of English literature and help them acquire basic critical and professional skills. Through the analysis of a variety of texts drawn from diverse periods and genres, students will be invited to explore some ways of approaching and interpreting poetry, prose, and drama. Such technical issues as genre, versification (metre, rhyme, rhythm, stanzaic pattern etc.), rhetorical figures, tropes (esp. metaphor), imagery, story, plot, narrative, narrator, characters, dramatic structure, sources, allusions, etc. will also be discussed in connection with the texts. On a more practical level the seminar is aimed at raising students’ awareness of various forms of secondary literature (critical editions, monographs, handbooks, scholarly journals, etc.) and other resources available in public libraries and on the Internet. Special attention will be paid to the skills of writing seminar papers.
