2-credit seminar, 30 h/term
description & set texts
This course will teach you the basic skills necessary for academic study. We will begin by looking at how to take effective lecture notes, how to use the library, and how to use essential reference sources. At the same time you will learn about the process approach to writing and the various techniques associated with it, such as brainstorming, planning, drafting, and proofreading. The emphasis as far as writing is concerned in this semester will be on producing well organised paragraphs of various types and learning how to summarise a text effectively. The question of what formal style is will be explored through the pieces that you write. Attention will also be given to the basics of punctuation and techniques for effective vocabulary learning. There will be regular reading assignments and every student will have to give a short oral presentation on an academic topic of their choice.
