The aim of this course is to familiarize participants with working in a business environment where English is the key language of communication. Topics to be covered include the language of meetings, presentations, negotiations, and micro skills associated with these areas. Skills work will include how to interview and be interviewed effectively, as well as – crucial to all the above—effective listening skills. Allison, J. et al (2008). The Business, Upper Intermediate, Macmillan. This book will be available for loan throughout the course.
requirements & assessment
Requirements: - regular attendance and active participation - thorough preparation for classes (readings, homework, group work, etc.) - research and presentation on businesses currently in the news - 2 vocabulary quizzes based on records kept by participants. Assignments: - Mini-presentation 1: to be confirmed - Mini-presentation 2: researching the news—communicative events—On-going in-class roleplays and associated homework preparation - Semester research paper: Focus on an EU business issue. (1,200-1,400 words). Assessment will be on the basis of • attendance and participation • the quality of the assignments (presentations, written work) • spoken skills development (including on-going in-class roleplays) • end term test
