The aim of the seminar is to provide an overview of the trends and traditions in American literature from the Colonial times to the late 19th century via the close reading and discussion of selected texts ranging from the diaries of Puritan settlers to 19th century women writers. Apart from the canonical texts, the course will also focus on texts and traditions previously omitted from the canon for reasons related to gender, race or class.
