The aim of the lecture is to provide a short chronological survey of American literature from the colonial times to the late 20th century. It will touch upon early America, colonisation, Puritanism, 18th century quest for independence, political narratives of America, the American Renaissance of the 19th century, early realism, modernism and post-modernism in the 20th century. It will also include areas and texts previously omitted from the classical canon of American literature.
