Heritage film (A brit örökség filmen) in spring 2005
Torma Eszter, Mon 16:30–18:00, ADS 234, host: DES (R338)
description & set texts
In this course we are going to deal with one of the most prominent British film genres of the 1980s and 1990s, namely "heritage film". At the beginning of the course we are going to take a closer look at the political and cultural background of the period that made it possible for these films to emerge. Later on we are going to deal with individual heritage films (usually two films per seminar). The aim of the course is to debate over the issue of heritage film and its categorization, and decide (if at all possible) whether the individual pictures fit in the heritage cycle or whether they should be put under a different umbrella. We are going to draw mostly on Andrew Higson's writing and our own ideas, so brave, open, and critical students are required in this class. Let me give you a few examples of the films we are going to watch and talk about: Chariots of Fire, A Room with a View, Howards End, Gandhi, Remains of the Day, A Passage to India, Tea with Mussolini, Orlando, Mrs. Dalloway, Elizabeth, etc.
requirements & assessment
Regular attendance is obviously required. An essay will have to be submitted at the end of the term and there will be weekly viewings of films out of which eight will be required. We will decide on the dates of the viewings together.
