description & set texts
The lectures cover the main events in the political and social history of the British Isles from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the present day, with references to the economy and cultural developments. Special attention will be paid to the Parliamentary reforms inaugurated by the Great Reform Bill of 1832, and the fundamental changes in government (especially in the social and financial sphere) which started before the First World War, and continued into the 1920s. British policy from the mid-1930s in the period leading to the Second World War, and Britain's unique role in that war will be covered in detail, as well as the post-war transformation in the country's status from world power into an often uncertain member of the European Union. When possible, the lectures will be illustrated by audio and video recordings. Set texts: Blythe, Ronald.
