description & set texts
Aims: This course aims to introduce students to Australia’s history. Although white European history of the country only stretches back to 1788, because of the original owners of the land, the Aborigines, Australia has one of the oldest continuous histories in the world. Estimates put it between 50 to 70,000 years. Even though the close to 220 years of white Australian history appears to be short, in comparison especially with European history, it is full of controversy that has resulted in today’s so-called “History Wars”. Although not in the scope of the course to try and give a definitive answer to these “History Wars” it will present the two sides of the controversy that has been central to the study of Australian history since the 1970s. The emphasis will be on events prior to 1975. Week 1: Introduction; Week 2: Australian geography and the arrival of Aborigines to Australia; Week 3: Aboriginal history prior to European settlement; Week 4: Discovering Australia; Week 5: Convict Transportation and the Irish in Australia; Week 6: First Settlers; Week 7: Gold Rushes and the Eureka Stockade; Week 8: Immigration; Week 9: Federation, the Australian Constitution and the Queen; Week 10: Australians in WWI; Week 11: Australians in WWII; Week 12: 1945-1975; Week 13: Aborigines since European Settlement; Week 14: Australia since 1975; Week 15: Conclusion Set texts: Due to the nature of the course there is no one set text. Instead photocopies will be made available of relevant chapters from books.
