Word order and scope from the perspective of Universal Grammar (Szórend és hatókör az Univerzális Grammatika tükrében) in spring 2009
Szécsényi Krisztina, Thu 12:00–13:30, E 448, host: DELG (R301)
description & set texts
The course focuses on Logical Form (LF), a third level of representation besides D-structure and S-structure. This is a module where semantic interpretation takes place, so at the beginning of the course we are going to discuss some formal semantics as well. The main questions to be discussed relate to the syntax-sematics interface, how certain sematic features interact with syntactic derivation. We are going to discuss data from several languages, but mainly from English and Hungarian, the latter often described as "the language that wears its LF on its sleeve", a property that will indeed be very useful for us during the semester. The theoretical frameworks we are going to work within are GB and Minimalism.
requirements & assessment
  1. Contribution to classroom discussions, which you can do only if you read the articles distributed at the end of every second/third class.
  2. A problem solving test (not a multiple-choice one!) at the end of the semester based on our discussions of the readings.
  3. Attendance, of course. More than three absences will not be tolerated.
If you have a research project related to the topic of the seminar you can opt for writing an essay instead of the problem solving test.
