This course has two basic aims: 1. to provide the students with an opportunity to practice and acquire the main techniques involved in giving successful presentations at conferences and meetings, including structuring a presentation, using visual aids and handling questions; 2. to assist the learners in developing the communication and language skills needed for public speaking and handling an audience. Students will be required to read and complete exercises from the following textbooks: • Comfort, Jeremy (1995). Effective Presentations. OUP. • Powell, Mark (1996). Presenting in English. Language Teaching Publications. In addition to the above, the students will be obliged to read and work on handouts provided by the teacher during the course.
requirements & assessment
Students will be required to: 1. attend and participate actively in classes; 2. complete weekly homework from the textbooks and handouts; 3. prepare and give presentations regularly; 4. pass an end-of-term in-class oral test. Assessment: oral test in the form of a presentation 70% and class participation 30%.
