Oral skills development (Szóbeli készségfejlesztés) in autumn 2006
Szöllősy, Judy, Wed 12:00–13:30, C/18, host: DEAL (R306)
description & set texts
This skill based course, taught by American speaking literary translator Judy Szöllősy is based on the premise that you speak a language when you can express yourself in it in a way that approximates native speakers’ use of the language. It will therefore focus on the linguistic and social habits of thought that lie behind communication in English, as well as the dos and don’ts, the etiquette, power relations and world views that are built into the English language. We will be learning to express ourselves in units of speech and thought rather than words strung together. We will identify significant sequences of thought, and the order of importance in which information is conveyed among English speakers. We will engage in role play, and analyze the meaning and significance of verbal signs. Emphasis will also be placed on vocabulary building and the spotting and elimination of Hunglish in all its forms. Note: This is going to be a high participation course. Students will be asked to do field work on topics we will be working on in class. Students will also be making short oral presentations, practice public speaking, the avoidance of conflict, and the art of debate. There will also be short written tasks. The form of the final examination will be determined mid-tern.
requirements & assessment
Assessment will be based on class attendance and task performance, as well as the completing of all your homework. Note: attendance and preparation for class is a must. If you do not attend, you will not pass. If you do not do your field work, you will not pass. You will get out of this course only as much as you put into it. I will be the conductor, but you will be the orchestra!
