The course introduces two rival conceptions of language in America: generative grammar and cognitive linguistics. We will discuss their major philosophical disagreements, but we will characterize in detail only cognitive linguistics, exploring its view of meaning, categorization, knowledge, grammar, metaphor, etc. The course will also offer an approach to the study of cultures in general and American culture in particular.
