The seminar course will concentrate on 6 novels (to be selected by the class from the novels listed below) as well as explore the following topics: The essay and other forms of short prose; A historical, political, social and artistic overview of the century; To teach and delight: wit, reason, humour and sentiment in the century; The Mothers of the Novel; Gothic and other developments of the genre; Postmodern tributes to the 18th century: Erica Jong, John Barth, Milan Kundera.

6 of the following works: Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels, Samuel Richardson, Pamela; Henry Fielding, Joseph Andrews; John Cleland, Memoirs of a Woman of Pleasure (Fanny Hill); Laurence Sterne, Tristram Shandy; Horace Walpole, The Castle of Otranto; Tobias Smollett, The Expedition of Humphry Clinker; Fanny Burney, Evelina.

Based on performance in class; shorter home assignments; talk on one aspect of a work to be discussed in class; a home essay or an in-class analytical essay.
