Editor's note

This is the eighth volume of The Odd Yearbook, which was originally a biennial compilation of linguistics papers written by undergraduate students at the School of English and American Studies, Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE), Budapest. The present volume breaks with this tradition in several respects, making it even ‘odder’ than the previous ones. First of all, there has been a gap of five years since the publication of Odd Yearbook 7, which clearly goes against the original biennial scheme – although hopefully we will not have to wait that long for the next volume. This hiatus also leads to a problem of nomenclature: the name of the series allegedly reflects the fact that it was meant to be published in odd numbered years, whereas the current year – 2010 – is even numbered. Then again, one should not be surprised by a bit of semantic bleaching in the name of a publication that goes back almost 20 years.

Another major change is in the range of authors: this time, any BA or MA student at the Faculty of Humanities at ELTE could submit a paper. Accordingly, the current volume presents a collection of papers on an unusually wide variety of topics: syntax (Júlia Bácskai-Atkári, Éva Dékány), phonology (Péter Rácz, Dániel Szeredi), sociolinguistics (Johanna Szőke), Sumerology (Szilvia Sövegjártó) and computational linguistics (Gábor Recski & Dániel Varga). It should also be noted that the quality of these articles is extremely high, especially if we consider the fact that they have been written by undergraduate students: I believe that many peer-reviewed linguistics journals would be more than happy to receive such a fine range of submissions.

My thanks are due to Krisztina Szécsényi, Mark Newson, Zoltán Kiss, Péter Szigetvári, László Varga, Gábor Zólyomi and Péter Halácsy for reviewing the papers. Zoltán Kiss and Péter Szigetvári – both of them editors of previous volumes – have also provided a great deal of help and encouragement during the editing process; without their comments and suggestions, The Odd Yearbook 8 would clearly not have been possible.
