Nádasdy Ádám
Huron's angol kiejtési kézikönyv
[Huron's English Pronunciation Dictionary]
contributor: Szigetvári Péter
Budapest: Biográf, 2000.
The dictionary is available in good bookshops and at a significant discount from Nádasdy and Szigetvári.
In addition to the standard IPA transcriptions, this dictionary contains the pronunciation of over 60 000 English words and names in standard Hungarian orthography. This way of rendering the pronunciation merges several phonemic differences of English, but in most cases gives what we believe to be standard educated pronunciation of these words in a Hungarian context, i.e., the recommended pronunciation for newsreaders, DJs etc., who do not — and in fact when speaking Hungarian, should not — utter English words in an English way.
The transcriptions may also prove useful for students beginning to study English. If unfamiliar with IPA symbols (as most such students are), the standard Hungarian orthography brings English pronunciation closer by showing an approximate form and proving that the English sounds are not so different from Hungarian sounds as the IPA symbols suggest.
Here follows a sample set of entries from the dictionary. The
prefix means that the word has a
General American pronunciation significantly different from the
Hungarianized British.
precedes
pronunciations traditionally Hungarianized when these differ from
what the algorithm generally used in the dictionary gives.
A
is used before
traditionally Hungarianized pronunciations which are deprecated,
usually because they involve some hyperanglicized feature. More
can be found on these issues and the whole dictionary in
a
paper on the dictionary. Note that IPA transcriptions are
omitted for lack of a standard HTML encoding of the symbols:
